Well for now abolishing the kickoff from NFL Football games is only a rumor, and talk amongst the reporters, and Monday morning quarterbacks.  The new rule on the Kickoff is to have the ball placed on the 35 yard line.  This will in effect reduce the amount of kickoff returns for a touchdown.  Which is a goal of the NFL owners, and some players.

I say some players because the special team player who had specialized in running kickoff plays back for touchdowns, and increasing their chances of bonuses and an increase in their next contract negotiations will be lessened.  In theory this will reduce injuries to players as well, which is the one good point out of the change.  The argument is that it will lower the speed that a player builds up by running down the field to make tackles that result in many serious injuries throughout history in the NFL.

I don’t personally believe this because a professional football player will be at full speed after 10 yards or so anyway, so the five yards the ball will be moved forward won’t really place much in the way of safety here.  But what it does do is, I believe is give raise to the amount of touch backs that will be taking place on the kickoff.  Most kickers will be able to kick the ball out of the end zone, or deep enough in the end zone so that there won’t be a run back anyway.

Now this is where the speculation comes in about abolishing the kickoff, since there will be a rise in touch backs, why not just place the ball on the 20 yard line, taking the kickoff out of the game?  Well once again this is where money rules the game.  With more touch backs, you get, the more television commercials you get, which is why they couldn’t agree on the CBA contract, and how to split the Billions of dollars from television revenue.
